Training Overview:

This presentation will provide an overview of psychosis spectrum symptoms, and highlight advances in early identification and intervention services. We will share unique considerations, challenges, and adaptations to assessment and treatment strategies for providers working with youth and families experiencing mental illness with psychosis, particularly those from underserved communities. The training will also provide practical guidance regarding general best practices in screening/assessment and treatment of early psychosis and will share recommendations for providing culturally-sensitive, recovery-oriented assessment and care for youth experiencing mental illness including psychosis and their families. Information about the Maryland Early Intervention Program (EIP) will also be reviewed, including the components of the EIP, services provided to the community, and how to connect with the EIP.

Objectives:

1. Discuss the psychosis spectrum and early identification and intervention, including general best practices in the screening/assessment and treatment of early psychosis and the Maryland Early Intervention Program (EIP).

2. Identify unique challenges faced by youth and families from underserved communities regarding early psychosis care.

3. Describe recommendations, guidelines, and next steps for providing culturally sensitive, recovery-oriented assessment and care for this population.

The University of Maryland School of Nursing is accredited with distinction as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

The University of Maryland School of Social Work's Office of Continuing Professional Education is authorized by the Board of Social Work Examiners in Maryland to sponsor social work continuing education programs and maintains full responsibility for this program. We are also approved to offer CE to Licensed Counselor and Psychologists. This training qualifies for up to 3 Category 1 CEs. Successful completion of this activity requires your participation in the entire activity, and completion of an evaluation form.  Late entry or leaving early will effect the number of CEs received. Pamela Rakhshan Rouhakhtar, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, as well as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland, School of Medicine. Pamela's work focuses on the validation and development of psychosis spectrum assessments, application of advanced quantitative methods in the study of early psychosis assessment, and studying the role of cultural and contextual factors -- particularly race -- in our understanding of the psychosis construct, as well as illness presentation, course, and treatment. She is also a co-director of the Strive for Wellness clinic within the Maryland Early Intervention Program, where she and the clinic team provide assessment, consultation, and treatment for youth and their families in the Maryland community experiencing early or attenuated symptoms of psychosis.

Doha Chibani (She//they) is a Board Approved Licensed Clinical Social Work Supervisor in the State of Maryland with over a decade of experience within child welfare, human trafficking, refugee and immigration services, as well as counseling centers and academic settings. She has specialized in providing social justice informed care to individuals of diverse racial and ethnic heritage and people along the expansive gender and sexual spectrum. She is currently the director of clinical services for the Strive for Wellness Clinic, a SAMHSA funded research based clinic that delivers early identification and intervention services to youth and young adults at risk of developing psychosis. Doha is a PhD candidate at UMBC, researching the impact of mental health parity law enforcement on insurance practices and access to care, advocating for systemic policy change to ensure behavioral health care access within insurance frameworks.
